Summer School: Summer University Ramnicu Sarat, Romania, 20-26 August 2012‏

Summer University of Ramnicu Sarat, Romania, 6th edition, 20 – 26 of August 2012



Râmnicu Sărat is a former communist prison, presently administrated by the Institute for the Investigation of Communist Crimes and Memory of the Romanian Exile (IICCMER), well known for its extremely oppressive detainment regime. The former prison is to be turned into a Memorial of the victims of communism.

Considering the history of this place, the Institute took the initiative of organizing each year a summer university. During the summer university IICCMER organizes seminars, discussions, workshops on the history of European communism, with the focus on the repressive methods. Students attending the faculties of history, political science, sociology, journalism, letters and law universities represent the target group of the project (19-27 years old). The project aims to help students acquire a better knowledge of the period 1944-1989, and thus to make them reflect upon the illegitimate and criminal nature of the communist regime in Europe. The connection with the past will be achieved, on one hand, by means of face-to-face dialogue with those who were victims and witnesses of the repressive communist system, and, on the other hand, by the presence of well-known lecturers, namely important public figures of post-communist Romania, foreign and Romanian researchers specialized on communism.



The project accepts 25 persons, selected on the basis of an application submitted to tintariu_adelina@gmail.com and universitatea@iiccr.ro



The deadline for submitting the applications is 15th of July. The results of the evaluation will be given on 21st of July.



Participants will be provided with free room, meals and transportation in Romania. Participants must cover their own travel expenses to Romania.

Internship: Delegation of the European Union to the United Nations in NewYork / USA August 2012

INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

The Delegation of the European Union to the United Nations in New York, offers three internship sessions per year.

The program, which is highly selective, offers interns the opportunity to follow the activities of the Delegation in UN bodies such as the Security Council, General Assembly and its various committees.

Please note internships are voluntary (unpaid), and interns will be required to work full-time (35-40 hours per week) during their internship period.

Only applicants who fulfil the following criteria will be considered.

Prospective interns must
hold a valid passport from one of the 27 EU Member States
have completed minimum three years of university-level courses preferably in political science, economics, development studies, environment studies, human rights/humanitarian law
be fluent in English, the main working language of the Delegation
provide proof of comprehensive medical and accident insurance that is valid in the USA and Canada (covering hospitalization, surgery, and repatriation, if necessary)
knowledge of French is preferable
not have already benefited from previous in-service training or employment (paid or unpaid) with any of the EU institutions or bodies for more than six weeks. Similarly, the Delegation cannot recruit a Blue Book candidate who has already performed his/her internship; on the contrary, a Blue Book candidate who has never performed a traineeship may apply for an unpaid internship

31 August for internship starting May (the next year) to July

The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) inTrondheim, Norway, is offering a PhD position as part of the Microsoft-led centre on Information Access Disruptions (iAD). Partially funded by the Research Council of Norway as a Centre for Research-based Innovation (SFI), iAD is directed by Microsoft Development Center Norway (MDCN) in collaboration with NTNU , Accenture, and leading universities: Cornell University, Dublin City University, BI Norwegian School of Management, and the universities in Tromsø (UiT),Oslo(UiO).

Information access technology has emerged as one of the most innovative technology areas impacting a wide range of industries, business models and even social patterns. As part of iAD, the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) wants to employ a PhD student within one of the following target areas:


Big data analytics.
Cloud data management.
Knowledge base acceleration.

We seek a highly motivated individual holding a Master’s degree in Computer and Information Science with a strong background in either database management systems, algorithms, or information retrieval. Additional background in distributed systems is preferable. Due to the high profile of the iAd Centre, the right candidates must demonstrate evidence of significant research potential beyond a strong academic degree. The internationally distributed nature of the Centre, including partners from research and industry, requires the right candidate to have very good communication skills in English and the ability to fill in a heterogeneous team environment. Very good skills in scientific and popular presentation and writing will also be considered in employment decisions.

PhD grants at NTNU are normally 3 years, but may – if the Department has the need – be extended by one additional year. With a 4 year grant, the candidates are expected to spend 25 % of their time on teaching or research assistance duties. These duties are commonly distributed over the 4 years.



The evaluation of applicants will be based on their education, job experience, possibly other relevant experience and scientific publications. Applicants must satisfy the formal requirements for admission to the PhD studies at NTNU. The appointment is at salary code 1017, which currently corresponds to a yearly gross income of NOK 416 300 (pay scale level 50). From this 2 % will be deducted for mandatory membership in the National Pension Fund.



The appointment will be made in accordance with current regulations with supplementary rules for research fellowship appointments in universities and polytechnics. Applicants must agree to participate in organized doctoral study programs within the period of the appointment. The successful applicant must agree to the conditions laid down for public employees. The Centre for Southeast European Studies, University of Graz in cooperation with the European Fund for the Balkans, Österreichische Gesellschaft für Europapolitik, Südosteuropa Gesellschaft and Europe Direct Steiermark will host a three day conference on the state of EU enlargement in Graz on the 9-11th November 2012. The goal of the conference is to reflect whether EU enlargement in the Western Balkans is in crisis and will include policy-led discussions on reinvigorating the EU enlargement process and academic panels on specific obstacles in the enlargement process. An edited collection of the best papers presented at the conference is planned for 2013.
This conference will discuss the obstacles and approaches to accelerate and reinvigorate the enlargement process. Instead of viewing enlargement as a state fullfilling formal criteria, the conference will focus on how and if the enlargement process can overcome "enlargement fatigue" and skepticism towards membership of the Western Balkans in the EU to key aspects that the enlargement process both hopes to overcome and which risk remaining an obstacle for EU membership. The conference in particular seeks to give room to young researchers who are able to contribute rich empirical work to the discussion. As an interdisciplinary event, the conference will include policy makers, lawyers, political scientists, sociologists and scholars from other disciplines. The working language of the conference is English.
The organizers invite paper proposal for the conference. Researchers interested in participating are asked to submit a 400 word abstract and CV by 20 July 2012 to the following email address: florian.bieber@uni-graz.at.
