Graduate and advanced undergraduate students enrolled at North American academic institutions (or academic institutions accredited in North America) engaged in research on ancient, medieval, or modern Bulgaria or the Balkan peninsula, in any field of the humanities and social sciences.





THE PROGRAM


The fellowships are of 9-month (September-May) or 3-month (September-November or February-April) duration. In addition to independent research, Fellows will participate in ARCS academic program which includes a series of lectures, seminars, and excursions designed to provide a broad thematic vision of Bulgarian and Balkan history and culture from prehistory to present.





THE FELLOWSHIPS


Fellows receive a monthly cash stipend ($600/month), housing in Bulgaria, language instruction, travel expenses within the academic program, and up to $1,000 for travel expenses between North America and Bulgaria. Up to 10 fellowships are awarded. Every year there are some applicants who were accepted in the program with only partial fellowship or without fellowship. We strongly encourage you to inquire in timely manner about possibilities for funding from your home institution as well and to indicate this in your application.

The George Washington University’s Institute for European, Russian and
Eurasian Studies (IERES) is pleased to announce a call for applications for
the Mellon Pre-doctoral Fellowship in Cold War/Post-1945 International
History for 2013-2014. Applicants need to have completed archival research
for their dissertation in two or more countries and be at the final writing
stage of their dissertation at an American university. The Fellow must be
in residence at IERES from September 2013 through June 2014 and will be
provided with an office and computer. The Fellow will also help the IERES
Director administer several workshops that train Ph.D. candidates to
conduct archival research. The award will offer support in the amount of
$25,000 per year, plus benefits.

Students, professionals and post-doc researchers from Kosovo who are staff members of Kosovan public universities are invited to apply for a PhD/Post-doc fellowship for (Austrian) universities with compliance to the strategy document “Higher KOS– Promoting Institutional Development in Higher Education and Research in Kosovo”.

A total number of 15 PhD or post-doc scholarships will be granted for Kosovan PhD students and researchers.

Five PhD scholarships will be granted alongside the programmatic partnerships at Austrian institutions, five PhD scholarships and five post-doc fellowships will be granted for Austrian universities. In case that an appropriate Austrian partner cannot be identified, universities from the region can be considered as partners. The Center invites proposals from Workshop Coordinator(s) to conduct two-week research workshops at the Museum during summer 2013. We welcome proposals from scholars in all relevant disciplines, including history, political science, literature, Jewish studies, philosophy, religion, anthropology, comparative genocide studies, and law.

Summer Research Workshops provide an environment in which groups of scholars working in closely related areas of study--but with limited previous face-to-face interaction--can gather to discuss a central research question or issue, their research methodologies and findings, the major challenges facing their work, and potential future collaborative scholarly ventures.

Participants have access to approximately 70 million pages of Holocaust-related archival documentation; the Museum's extensive library; oral history, film, photo, art, artifacts, and memoir collections; and a Holocaust survivor database. In addition, participants have access to more than 100 million digitized pages from the holdings of the International Tracing Service (ITS), a collection that holds information on the fates of 17.5 million people who were subject to incarceration, forced labor, and displacement as a result of World War II. Many of these sources have not been examined by scholars, offering unprecedented opportunities to advance the field of Holocaust studies.

The Summer Research Workshop program has a two-stage application process. Stage One is a Preliminary Application, consisting of a one-page single-spaced description of the proposed workshop that details the research project's focus, significance, scope, methods, objectives, and expertise required from potential participants. Stage One applications are due October 15, 2012. Applicants will be notified at the end of October whether they will be invited to submit a Full Proposal in the second round of the competition, with the assistance of Center staff. The deadline for the full proposal is February 1, 2013. Applicants will be notified of the Center's decision by March 1, 2013.

The Center awards fellowships to support significant research and writing about the Holocaust and welcomes proposals from scholars in all relevant academic disciplines, including history, political science, literature, Jewish studies, philosophy, religion, sociology, anthropology, comparative genocide studies, law, and others.

Fellowships are awarded to candidates working on their dissertations (ABD), postdoctoral researchers, and senior scholars. Applicants must be affiliated with an academic and/or research institution when applying for a fellowship. Immediate post-docs and faculty between appointments will also be considered. Awards are granted on a competitive basis.

The specific fellowship and the length of the award are at the Center's discretion. Individual awards generally range up to nine months of residency; a minimum of three consecutive months is required. Fellowships of five months or longer have proven most effective. Stipends range up to $3,500 per month for the purpose of defraying local housing and other miscellaneous living expenses. Residents of the Washington, DC-metropolitan area receive a reduced stipend of $1,750 per month.

This project aims to investigate how institutions come about and what makes them change. Point of departure are individuals wishing to change institutions like labour laws. The main research question is: How may individuals wishing to change institutions set about doing so and what determines their likelihood of success?

The project will develop a theory to address this question. This will focus on the intermediary role of meso-level organizations in attempts to change institutions. The theory will subsequently be submitted to an empirical test. The test focuses on a particular case of institutional change, to wit, employment quota for women in top labour market positions. For this empirical application, the project will consider firms as meso-level organizations that may intermediate in individual attempts to change institutions.

Female employment quota are an interesting case of institutions. This is because they vary a lot across countries, even though in most countries there are people that would like to support women’s participation in high positions through the development of new institutions. Though the importance of institutions on gender (in)equality is well-established, much less is known about their origin.

Following the tradition in analytical sociology the project focuses on the mechanisms underlying relations between: (i) micro-level individual decisions; (ii) meso-level organizational processes; and (iii) the macro-level institutional setup. The interest is in whether and how organizations mediate when individuals want to change institutions.

More in particular, the project will address the following questions:

* What explains the divergence in success when individuals try to change institutions?
* What mechanisms determine whether meso-level organizations mediate in individual attempts at institutional change?
* What mechanisms affect the likelihood that mediating organizations will succeed in changing institutions?

While the theory aims at applicability to a wide range of institutional changes, the empirical application on employment quota provides a suitable testbed. Three countries will serve as specific cases to test the theory’s predictions. For a stress-test, one country is chosen where institutions on women’s board representation have substantially changed (Norway), one with less change (the Netherlands), and one without change (Poland).

PhD Project: Micro-Meso-Macro Empirics
The main objective of this project is to study how the interaction between individuals in a firm affects the likelihood that the firm will mediate in attempts to change institutions. It will do so by looking at the relationships between individuals’ value orientations and firm’s social norms, and between these norms and the firm’s formal rules, in each of the three countries. This will be addressed by collecting and analyzing field survey data from employers and employees of randomly selected firms in each country e.g., using data banks of national chambers of commerce or branch organizations. These data will be used to explain cross-firm variations (per country) in the extent of mediation by cross-firm differences in the relationships between individuals’ value orientations and organizations’ social norms, and between these social norms and the organizations’ formal rules.

Possibly, the project will be extended to investigate how social mobilization between the firm and other organizations (e.g., trade unions, political parties, women lobby groups) affects the likelihood of successful institutional change. This will be addressed by combining the field survey data with in-depth interviews in each country with key informants from firms (e.g., female board professionals), unions, political parties, women’s lobbies, churches, etc.

Requirements

* Master’s or Research Master’s Degree in one of the social sciences (or expectation of completion before the starting date of the project);
* Affinity with quantitative and qualitative methods and techniques in the social sciences;
* Interest in interdisciplinary research;
* Willingness to give English-language presentations, to publish in the English language, and to teach in the Field of Social Sciences (in English as well);
* Language competencies in other languages than Dutch or English will be considered as an advantage.

Appointment

The position will be on a temporary basis for the period of 3 or 4 years (12 months plus a further 24 or 36 months after a positive evaluation and depending on the preparatory training). The project will start in the fall of 2012. The gross monthly salary will be € 2,042 in the first year and € 2,612 in the fourth year in the case of a full-time position (38 hrs / week). Secondary benefits at Dutch universities are attractive and include 8% holiday pay and an 8.3% end of year bonus.

Overview: The Doctoral studies represent the third cycle of studies offered by Babeş-Bolyai University (BBU) in partnership with the Institute for Cultural Diplomacy, with the purpose of expanding knowledge through original scientific research. They allow the acquisition of a level 8 qualification according to The European Qualifications Framework and to The National Qualifications Framework.

The Key Objectives of the program are:

• To provide students with an in-depth understanding of the theory and practice of global business.

Setting Description: The degree is awarded by the Babes-Bolyai University in partnership with the ICD, with instruction entirely in English.

The doctoral studies of a doctoral student are planned for a period of 3 academic years (each composed of 2 academic semesters) and comprise:

A. a training program based on advanced academic studies, carried out in the BBU doctoral school; in Cluj, Romania.

B. an individual program of scientific research/artistic creation, carried out in the ICD- Berlin.

C. The doctoral studies end with the public defense of an original paper, called doctoral thesis, which is the result of the research activity or artistic creation carried out by the doctoral student during his/her doctoral studies. The title of doctor is granted or not granted on the basis of the doctoral thesis and its public defense. The doctoral thesis phase could be conducted anywhere.

Context
Under the framework of the 5-year research project "Stochastic Modelling of
Dependence: Systems under Stress", sponsored by the Académie Louvain, the
Université catholique de Louvain opens up to four PhD positions in statistics,
econometrics or actuarial sciences.
The overall goal of the research project is to construct new ways of measuring and
modelling risks in systems with intricate dependence structures, moving towards model
assumptions that better reflect real life complexity. Particular attention is to be paid to
the behaviour of such systems in periods of distress, that is, upon the arrival of
shocks, after structural breaks, or when comovements between risk factors are higher
than usual.
The specific topics for the open positions are:
1. Time Series Analysis: Development of multivariate mixed models (panel data,
factor models) of nonstationarity (structural breaks, local stationarity).
2. Nonlinear Dependence and Actuarial Risk Theory: Copula models,
extremal dependence, interplay between stochastic orderings and dependence
concepts, effect of the dependence structure in optimal decision problems.
3. Financial econometrics: Modelling high-dimensional volatility matrices in
dynamic models, including model construction, estimation, prediction, and
testing.
4. Functional Data Analysis: functional vector autoregession, functional
classification and prediction, weak dependence, minimax theory.
Profile
• You have completed (or you are near completion) of a five-year Master in Statistics,
Actuarial Sciences, Econometrics or related fields (e.g. applied mathematics,
probability, physics, engineering, ...) with honours.
• Strong interest in quantitative and mathematical modelling.
• Decent knowledge of written and spoken English. Knowledge of French is not
required.
• Final-year master undergraduate students are especially encouraged to apply.
