PhD: Two Ph.D. Research Fellowships "Diasporas and Contested Sovereignty", University of Amsterdam‏

Two four-year Ph.D. Fellowships are available within the Project “Diasporas and Contested Sovereignty,” sponsored by the European Research Council, and to be conducted at the University of Amsterdam under the supervision of Dr. Maria Koinova. The University of Amsterdam has an internationally acclaimed research profile and is a member of the League of European Research Universities. Its Faculty of Social and Behavioral Sciences is the largest in the social sciences in the Netherlands.



A team of four researchers (PI, post-doc, two Ph.D. researchers) will investigate the transnational mobilization of conflict-generated diasporas in Europe and their impact on polities experiencing contested sovereignty in the Balkans, the Caucasus, and the Middle East. The team aspires to answer an overarching question: does the mobilization of conflict-generated diasporas in liberal states have a mitigating or exacerbating effect on political conflict in the original homelands? The overall project focuses on five levels of analysis: 1) the attitudes of elite and non-elite individuals, 2) characteristics of specific groups, 3) five nation-states with different migrant incorporation regimes (France, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, and the UK), 4) diaspora linkages to supranational EU and global institutions, and 5) diaspora mobilization patterns specific to each of the three conflict-prone regions. Complementing the results of the comparative studies, the project will also conduct a cross-country representative survey to capture attitudes of non-elite individuals in 25 country-groups.



Candidates with academic background in comparative politics, international relations, transnationalism, migration, foreign policy analysis, or other relevant post-graduate experience are encouraged to apply. Prior qualitative and/or quantitative methods training is highly desirable. One Ph.D. researcher will focus on the Bosnian diaspora mobilization in selected EU countries for the post-conflict reconstruction process in Bosnia-Herzegovina. The other Ph.D. researcher will focus on the Iraqi diaspora in Europe and Iraq. Linguistic skills are required: Bosnian/Serbian/Croatian - for Ph.D. researcher 1, and Arabic for Ph.D. researcher 2. Researchers will be expected to do multi-sited research both in Europe and Bosnia-Herzegovina/Iraq, assist with the organization of project-related events, attend courses within the Ph.D. program, write a dissertation and other publications, and teach in the field of political science.



Gross monthly salary will be €2.042 in the first year and will reach € 2.612 during the fourth year based on full-time employment, in accordance with regulations for Dutch universities. The project also offers field research subsidy, and opportunities to travel to academic conferences.

Panel: Gender Studies in Romania – From Margins to Center



Currently in Romania there is only one MA program offering a degree in Gender Studies. Even so, the program is not fully focused on gender studies, but on politics, gender and minorities. A new MA program in Equal Opportunities was launched in autumn 2011, but only a small segment of the curriculum addresses gender issues. Why does Gender Studies continue to be an “exotic” teaching and research domain in Romania and what can be done in order to make the Romanian academic curriculum more gender-inclusive? - these are the main questions that this panel wishes to broach.



Paper proposals are invited in the following areas:


The institutionalization of GS in Romanian Universities (case studies are recommended);
Strategies of bringing gender from the margins to the center: gender mainstreaming, interdisciplinarity, GS as a recognized discipline in its own right
Feminist scholarship vs feminist activism; Academic feminism/Women’s Studies/Gender Studies in Romania



Other related issues are also encouraged.

Humanitarianism: Past, Present and Future? 8 -10 November, 2012

Hosted by: The Humanitarian and Conflict Response Institute (HCRI), The University of Manchester

While the field of humanitarian studies is growing rapidly, it remains unclear if and in what way the research offered by historians and social scientists enters into the reflections of practitioners and policy makers. This three-day conference will explore the past, present, and future of humanitarianism, emphasising links between scholars and practitioners in order to forge better understanding of the humanitarian field. It will provide a platform for mutual reflection by showcasing recent historical and social science scholarship, while also involving practitioners as respondents to such work, so as to better inform both contemporary scholarship and the practice of humanitarian intervention.

The conference will be organised along four major strands:

1. Disasters and Disaster Response: highlighting issues such as resilience and agency amongst relief workers and the people living through conflicts and disasters

2. NGOs, FBOs and Multilateral Organisations: focusing on themes such as compassion motives, faith and market logic and competitivity

3. Humanitarian Technologies: including medical and logistical developments taking place in 'humanitarian crisis"

4. Humanitarian Personnel and Professionalization: focusing on such concerns as volunteerism,
humanitarian space and the desires to collaborate which have shaped humanitarian aid since the League of Nations

We invite contributions on the themes listed above and related topics. We welcome submissions from practitioners and from scholars in the fields of history, international relations, politics, anthropology, cultural studies, education and development studies, experts in medical and health studies, or other related fields. Full panel and individual paper and poster submissions will be considered. The deadline for submissions is the **20th of April 2012. **

Conference: Princeton University, Graduate Student Conference in Modern Greek Studies, May 4, 2012‏

The Seeger Center for Hellenic Studies at Princeton University announces our fourth International Graduate Student Conference in Modern Greek Studies.

Submissions are invited from doctoral candidates at the final stages of their dissertation work. We seek proposals for papers that explore the interplay between moments of crisis and processes of innovation in modern Greece. Our primary aim is to discuss these two concepts, to explore their relationship and indicate their role in Greek social, political, and cultural life from the early modern period to the present. Possible research areas include institutions, policies, practices, discourses, and identities. We welcome submissions from various disciplines, such as anthropology, art history, film studies, economics, history, literary criticism, political science, and sociology. Comparative or interdisciplinary approaches are welcome. Papers should be in English, and must not exceed 30 minutes.

Please submit abstracts of approximately 350 words no later than February 3, 2012. All Greek words should be transliterated. Each abstract should be accompanied by a cover letter, including (i) a curriculum vitae; (ii) a brief statement how the proposed paper connects with the dissertation-in-progress; (iii) the applicant's contact details (name, current affiliation, postal and e-mail addresses; tel. nos.); (iv) the names and e-mail addresses of two academic referees, including the dissertation supervisor and one other person familiar with the candidate's current research.

Receipt of all submissions will be acknowledged. The applicants will be notified by February 24, 2012, whether their submissions have been accepted. Participants will be expected to submit the full text of their papers by April 13, 2012. Papers will be precirculated among conference speakers, chairs, and respondents.

The Center for Hellenic Studies will cover participants' travel expenses to Princeton, and will offer shared (double-occupancy) accommodation (up to four nights), as well as some meals on the days of the conference.

The International Workshop “Intercultural Dialogue in Theory and Practice in SEE”

will be held at the

The workshop will bring together experts/researchers on intercultural dialogue from Austria, Slovenia and SEE countries (with a focus on communication, education and sustainable development in cities) who will elaborate on possibilities to evaluate and improve intercultural dialogue policies and programs in Southeast Europe based on experience gained in the context of the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue http://www.interculturaldialogue2008.eu/ and SEE Regional Action plan of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAoC) www.unaoc.org (having in mind also the fact that UNAoC Annual Forum 2013 is going to be held in Austria).
